The Dunvegan area, steeped in rich history in the Mighty Peace region, is an essential stop on any expedition. Upon arrival, you’ll encounter the iconic Dunvegan Bridge, Alberta’s longest vehicle suspension bridge. Boasting a convenient boat launch managed by the Dunvegan River Rats Society, it offers easy access for docking and exploring historical fur trading sites in this picturesque locale.

Adjacent to the bridge lies Dunvegan Provincial Park, featuring nearly 70 powered RV stalls, tap water, a sani-dump station, playgrounds, restrooms, and scenic walking paths. Just beyond the campground awaits Dunvegan Market Gardens, where visitors can enjoy a greenhouse, mini golf course, and a seasonal restaurant.

As you depart Dunvegan, don’t miss the captivating rock formations along the cliffs of the left riverbank—an enduring testament to nature’s creativity that never fails to fascinate.

Bewley Island, Town of Peace River

After passing under the bridges in Peace River, you’ll reach Bewley Island. You can navigate on either side of the island, but the deeper, more scenic channel is to the left. Rising along the left side are impressive cliffs of vertical sandstone, adorned with Cliff Swallow nests—a captivating sight for nature enthusiasts.

Graham’s Flats, County of Northern Sunrise

Just beyond Carmon Creek lies Graham’s Flats. A trail leads to the flats that features an old gazebo, picnic tables, and a stunning river view, making it a pleasant rest stop during your adventures.

Whitemud River, County of Northern Lights

Flowing into the Peace River from the left, the mouth of the Whitemud River was once the location of the Northwest Company’s earliest fur trading post. You will be able to witness some of the highest cliffs here, with many that are over 1,000 feet tall. This is an excellent place to do some sight seeing and take in the natural beauty around you. 

UFO Rocks, County of Northern Sunrise

Worth the stop, the UFO rocks are a sight to see. These unusual shaped rocks fell from the cliff due to erosion and are known as concretions – a spherical rock formed in a sedimentary host rock such as sandstone or siltstone. There are also many other large rocks in this boulder field, and the diversity in the area will wow you.

Dock your boat along the rocky and sandy beach and spend a few minutes, or even hours, scoping out the natural curiosities and admiring the driftwood that is scattered throughout.
